4.1 Urban Economy and Role of the Town

The town serves as administration, commerce and tourism center. There are 25 wholesale trade, 322 retail trade, 232 service, two fuel stations, two garage and 52 other firms in the town. There are two Commercial Bank of Ethiopia branch and Dedebite micro finance giving financial services in the town. Economic activity rate in the town was 49.9% while unemployment rate was 50.1%. There are three kindergartens; five government primary schools; two government junior secondary schools; one high school including preparatory; one government TVET and two private colleges in Alamata town. The student teacher ratio was known to be 1:24 for kindergartens, 1:31 for primary school and 1:49 for junior secondary school.
