Urban Economy and Role of the Town

The town serves as administration and industrial center. There are 105 manufacturing, 12 wholesale, 631 retail trade, 347 service trade, four fuel stations and three garages in the town. There are three banks and three micro financial institutions giving financial services in the town. Economic rate activity for both sex is 59.7% while unemployment rate is 16%. The average annual revenue of the municipality within the 2005-2010 period was 43,902,029.14 Birr and the major sources of revenue were taxes and service charges.

The major investment opportunities in the town are: agro-industry processing and construction. Burayu has economic linkages with the surrounding areas, towns, and Addis Ababa. The town gets grain products, livestock supply, natural resources (fuel wood, charcoal) and surplus labor from surrounding areas. The town gets agricultural inputs from Adama and Addis Ababa, manufacturing and commercial products and some construction materials from Addis Ababa and the town itself.

There are 58 rivate kindergartens; six government and 32 private primary schools; five government and 32 junior secondary schools; two high schools including preparatory; one TVET, one private and one government college in Burayu town.
