4.1 Urban Economy and Status of the Town

The town is administration and trade center. There are 28 manufacturing industries, 10 wholesale trade, 400 retail trades, 305 service trades, three fuel stations, garages and bank in the town. The town administration organized 731 unemployed youth and women in to 122 associations and have started working. Cattle breeding, fattening, development of health and education services are the investment opportunities in the town.

Metehara has economic linkages with the surrounding areas and towns in the region. The town gets grain products, livestock supply, natural resources (fuel wood, charcoal) from surrounding areas. The success of Boset-Fentale irrigation will make the town to be center for agro-processing.

Until 2011, there are two private and nine government kindergartens; three government and two private primary and secondary schools; one senior secondary school including preparatory in the town.

Health

Regarding health services in the town there are 13 private clinics and one government health center, 11 pharmacies and four drug stores.
