Urban Economy and Role of the Town
Metu town mainly serves as zone and wereda administration and trade center. There are 33 manufacturing industries, 67 wholesale trades, 389 retail trades, 209 service trades, three fuel stations and eight garages in the town. There are four banks, one saving and credit institution and one insurance is available. The average annual revenue of the municipality was 6.33 million Birr and the major sources of revenue were taxes from urban land, houses and trade. The per capita revenue within the same period was 142.95 Birr. The major investment opportunities in the town are hotel development, coffee cultivation in the surrounding areas, and dry coffee milling.
Metu town has economic linkages with the surrounding areas, Addis Ababa and Jimma. The town gets agricultural inputs, manufacturing and commercial products from Addis Ababa and Jimma, and grain products, livestock supply, natural resources and labour from surrounding areas.
