According to the National Population and Housing Census carried out in 2007 by Central Statistical Authority, the population of the town was 57,588. Out of this 26,010 (45%) were males and 31,578 (54.8%) were females.  Regarding the age distribution 21,113 (36.6%) were within the age group of 0-14 years, 32,959 (57.2%) 15-59 years, and 3,516 (6.1%) 60 years and above. The annual population growth rates at high, medium and low variants were 5.6, 4.6 and 3.6%, respectively while the average household size in the town was calculated to be 3.6.
