4.1 Urban Economy and Role of the Town
The town serves as woreda administration, trade, transportation and horticulture production center. There are 66 manufacturing, 40 wholesales, 532 retail trades, 674 service trades, one fuel station and one garage in the town. There are two banks and five Micro Financial institutions giving financial services in the town. Unemployment rate for the town in both sexes was 16%.
The average annual revenue of the municipality within the 2006-2010 period was 8,650,732.49 Birr and the major sources of revenue were land rent, difference taxes and service charges. The major investment opportunities in the town are: agro–industry processing, hotel and tourism development, construction industry and social services (education and health).
Holeta has economic linkages with the surrounding areas, towns, region and Addis Ababa. The town gets grain products, livestock supply, natural resources (fuel wood and charcoal) and surplus labor from surrounding areas. The town gets agricultural inputs, manufacturing and commercial products from Addis Ababa while construction material are obtained from Addis Ababa and the town itself.
