According to the National Population and Housing Census carried out in 2007, the population of Maychew town was 23,419. Out of this 11,024 (47%) were males and 12,395(52.9%)  females.  Regarding age distribution 6,420 (27.4%) were within the age group of 0-15 years, 13,690 (58.45%) 16-60 years, and 1,309 (5.58%) 61 years of age and above. The average household size in the townwa was calculated to be 3.2 whie the annual population growth rate at medium variant was estimated to be 2.5%,  .
