4.1 Urban Economy and Status of the Town
The town is administration and trade center. There are three government and four private banks, four insurance institutions, two micro finance and 12 hotels in the town. The average annual revenue of the municipality within 2008-2011 was 27 million Birr and the major sources of revenue were taxes, rent and service charges. Wolayita Sodo has economic linkages with the surrounding areas and towns in the region. The town gets grain products, livestock supply, natural resources (fuel wood, charcoal) from surrounding areas.

Education
There are eight private kindergartens; 24 government and one private primary schools; six government secondary schools a total of 38 schools in the town. Currently 33000 students are learning in these schools. One government university, two government and five private colleges have received 12000 students and are giving training in different professional fields.
Health
Regarding health services in the town there are two hospitals, three government health centers, 14 private clinics, 15 pharmacies, in the town and 330 health professionals give service.
