4.1 Urban Economy and Role of the Town
The town is Administration and Commerce center. Commercial Banks of Ethiopia and Omo micro finance institutions giving services in the town. The average annual revenue of the municipality was 2,381,261.5 Birr. The major investment opportunity in the town is coffee trade.
Yergalem has economic linkages with the surrounding areas, towns, region and Addis Ababa. The town gets livestock supply, natural resources (fuel wood, charcoal) and labor from surrounding areas while grain products came from Oromia region. Agricultural inputs, construction materials, manufacturing and commercial products supplied to the town from Addis Ababa and Adama.

Yergalem town has meeting hall, ambulance, abattoir; a general market meeting two times a week on Mondays and Thursdays in Sidetegna while Tuesday and Friday in Aposto and daily market. Solid waste in the town is collected using ten horse-drawn carts and one tractor and disposed in open dump. Micro and small enterprises are engaged in solid waste collection. There are eight public toilets in the town. There is a green area covering 211.14ha and street trees are also planted along the road, three standard hotels, one stadium, and Gidabo River exist in the town. Regarding religious services there are five churches for Orthodox Christians, 14 churches for Protestants and three mosques in the town.
