4.1 Urban Economy and Role of the Town The town serves as woreda and zone administration, and commercial center.

There are 46 manufacturing industries, 23 wholesale trades, 444 retail trades, 153 service trades, three fuel stations, four garage and

five financial institutions in the town.

 

The average annual revenue of the municipality was 2.933 million Birr and the major sources of revenues were land rents and taxes.

The per capita revenue was 87.80 Birr. The major investment potentials opportunities in the town are: agro-industry, fattening,

hotel, tourism, manufacturing industry and processing.  

 

Butajira town has economic linkages with the surrounding

areas, Hawassa, Hosaina and Addis Ababa. The town

gets grain products, livestock supply, natural resources (fuel wood

and charcoal) and labor from surrounding areas and

manufacturing and commercial products from Addis Ababa.

There are 14 privately owned KGs; four government and two

private primary schools; one government

junior secondary (1-8 grade) schools; one private senior secondary

(9-10 grade) school, one preparatory

school; one TVET; one university; one government and two

private colleges in Butajira town.  

Health

Regarding health services, in the town there are one government

and one private hospital, and one

government and one private health center, one government

and 15 private clinics. There are two  

ambulances that give service to emergency cases.                  

 

Municipal services

Butajira town has one public meeting hall, abattoir giving

slaughtering service for Christians; general and cattle

markets meeting twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays and

two daily markets. Solid waste is collected by tractor and four

donkeys and horse drown carts and disposed in three authorized pits. Three Micro and Small Scale Enterprises are engaged in

collection and transportation of solid waste. The per

capita waste production is 0.3-0.6 kg/day. There are 28 public

toilets in the town, while liquid waste generated in the town is

collected by vacuum trucks rented from other towns.

 

There is a forest area covering 30 ha and street trees are

also planted along 7.18Km. There are two parks, one public

library and town hall, a stadium (under construction), 6 semi

standard hotels in the town. Two rivers called Erinzaf and

Eresha exist in the town. Regarding religious services,

there are five churches for Orthodox Christians, eight

churches for Protestants and eight mosques in the town.
