4.1 Urban Economy and Role of the Town
The town mainly serves as woreda and zone administration and trade center. There are 143 manufacturing
industries, 248 whole sale trades, 1707 retail trades, 1167 service trades, seven fuel stations and 56
garages in the town. There are 20 banks giving services in the town. The average annual revenue of the
municipality is 40,551,651.80 Birr and the major sources of revenue were urban land lease, service
charges and different taxes. The major investment opportunities in the town are agro-industry, fattening,
hotel and lodges.
Shashemane town has economic linkages with the surrounding areas and Addis Ababa. The town gets
grain products, livestock supply, natural resources (fuel wood and charcoal) and labor from surrounding
areas, manufacturing and commercial products from Addis Ababa.

Education
There are 31 privately owned kindergartens; three government and nine private primary (1-8 grade)
schools; 28 private and 18 government junior secondary (7-8 grade) schools; three government and two
private senior secondary (9-10) schools; one TVET; one university; one government and ten private
colleges in Shashemane town.
Health
Regarding health services in the town there are two government, two private hospitals, six government
health post, three government health centers and 32 private clinics, and ambulances that give service for
emergency cases.
Municipal Services
Shashemane town has three government, six private meeting halls, abattoir; general and cattle markets meeting once a week on Saturdays and 3 daily markets. Solid waste is collected by a dump truck, with 37 solid waste container and disposed in authorized open dump site. There are 15 public toilets in the town, and liquid waste is collected by vacuum truck. There is a green recreation area covering 17.5 ha, one park, one public and one private library, a stadium and five playgrounds, one 5 star and two four star hotels in the town. Regarding religious services, there are six churches for Orthodox Christians, 26 churches for Protestants and 11 mosques for Muslims.
