The draft road and transport policy jointly prepared by the Ministry of Urban Development and Infrastructure and the Ministry of Transport and Logistics has been reviewed by stakeholders and inputs have been collected to develop the policy.
The review forum was attended by Ministers and State Ministers of both ministries, as well as heads of relevant institutions, stakeholders and invited guests.
The importance of the policy was explained in the program and the draft policy document was presented by both ministries, and a joint discussion was held on the documents presented and inputs were collected from the participants to develop the policy.
As stated in the importance of the policy, it was stated that the separate policy study, which was previously planned to be conducted by the two institutions separately, is mutually supportive, but inseparable, and requires coordination with other institutions beyond themselves. Therefore, it is necessary to jointly issue the policy in order to use the capacity, create coordination, and link the works with technology to provide safe, modern and sustainable road and transport services and expand equitable road and transport access.
It is also said that the issuance and approval of the policy to provide a coordinated, safe, inclusive and sustainable, systematically managed modern and sustainable road transport service will enable it to move in line with the growing and evolving needs of society and economic and social growth.
During the discussion, it was noted that the draft policy takes into account road safety, driver competency, traffic management, and climate change, and additional inputs were raised from the floor on issues that need to be improved.
Finally, the Minister of Urban Development and Infrastructure, Honorable Ms. Chaltu Sani, and the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Honorable Alemu Sime (Dr.), in their concluding remarks, it was stated that there should be a strong public-private partnership for the sector to achieve the expected results for the country, and that it is necessary to work towards a convenient, safe and inclusive policy that protects the environment and natural ecosystems; strengthens regional connectivity, and enables seamless transport activities.
