Jigjiga, May 14, 2018 (EFE): The construction of the Jigjiga City Bypass Road, which was planned and built to permanently alleviate the severe traffic congestion in Jigjiga City, Somali Region, was completed and officially inaugurated today.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Somali Regional State Governor, Ato Mustefe Mohammed, the Minister of Urban and Infrastructure Development, Ms. Chaltu Sani, the State Minister of Urban and Infrastructure Development, Dr. Yetmegeta Asrat, the Director General of the Ethiopian Roads Administration, Mohamed Abdurahman (Engineer), and other senior federal and regional government officials, elders and local residents.
Somali Regional State President Ato Mustefe Mohammed said that this road project will not only strengthen the economic ties with the eastern part of our country, but will also take our social relations to a higher level. He also stated that the completion of the infrastructure is a great achievement that will inspire us to continue our great work.
He expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders who have fulfilled their responsibilities efficiently during the construction process and stressed that the regional government will continue to provide the necessary support and supervision to ensure that other development projects in our region are completed within the set quality standards and time frame. “
Today we are not just celebrating the completion of a road; today we are celebrating a major historical milestone that has satisfied the development thirst of our people, increased the economic potential of our city and demonstrated our overall development,” said Minister of Urban Development and Infrastructure, Ms. Chaltu Sani. Jigjiga is known to be a crossroads of many cultures, love and economy. This road will further enhance and facilitate this crossroads, he said.
For his part, the Director General of the Ethiopian Roads Administration, Engineer Mohamed Abdurahman, gave an explanation regarding the quality and standard of the project, and the Ethiopian Roads Administration, in accordance with the national mandate entrusted to it by the government, is responsible for the construction of our country’s roads. He stated that he will continue his journey to accelerate infrastructure construction and improve the accessibility of our people.
The responsibility of maintaining and maintaining this modern road for a long time is ours, especially the residents, he conveyed his message.
This 7.3 kilometer long and 30 meter wide road, which also includes pedestrian walkways, has given the city a special beauty.
In particular, it is an alternative for heavy and light trucks coming from Togo Chale and Degehabur to pass through the city center without crossing the city, which significantly reduces the tiring traffic congestion at the entrance and exit of the city.
The construction cost of 672 million 98 thousand 730 birr and 28 cents was fully covered by the federal government, while the construction was carried out by the country’s Yirgalem Construction, while Elda and Damra Consulting Firms jointly provided the consulting and supervision work. They have done so.
It was pointed out during the inauguration that the project will play a significant role in accelerating the overall development of Jigjiga.
The road has been providing standard traffic services since its construction was completed.
