Addis Ababa, December 24/2018, (From Melmi)

The Rural Connectivity and Access to Food Security Program, with support from the World Bank and contributions from the federal and regional governments, has been implementing the construction of new rural roads, maintenance roads, suspension bridges and various types of overpasses in all regions and Dire Dawa City Administration since the 2017 budget year under the coordination of the Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure Development.

Therefore, to strengthen the capacity of the regions and to enable the program to be implemented on the ground, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIPT) has handed over 28 petrol vehicles and 130 motorbikes purchased through the IPF Window, and an additional 88 construction machinery and 145 information technology equipment that are in the process of being purchased will be provided on an ongoing basis.

Honorable Minister Chaltu Sani, who attended the handover ceremony, said that although the support received was planned to be implemented over a period of 5 years, in line with the government’s commitment to respond to the development needs of the people, we are expected to implement the plan with innovation and speed, in line with its commitment to complete the development needs of the people within 3 years and move on to other ongoing projects.

He also stated that the motorbikes and petrol vehicles provided should be used only for their intended purpose and that the Ministry will monitor and control them. The grants are for projects in 126 districts where the program is being implemented according to the government budget.

The regions, for their part, have accepted the mandate given to them by the Medemer government and have pledged to complete the projects within the stated 3-year period and to create additional resources to prepare for another new program, and have pledged to prove it in practice rather than in words.

The handover ceremony was attended by ministers, World Bank representatives, and senior officials of the Regional Road Development and Transport Bureau.
