Addis Ababa, July 16/2018 (Kemeli)The Ethiopian Roads Authority celebrated its Diamond Jubilee with a grand ceremony, commemorating the historical road development milestones it has traveled over the past 75 years, commemorating the achievements of the institution, and pledging a new development phase for tomorrow.
The event was attended by senior government officials, former leaders and staff of the institution, development partner institutions, contractors, consultants, invited guests, and the agency’s officers and staff.
Minister of Urban Development and Infrastructure Chaltu Sani stated at the ceremony; She stated that this 75th Diamond Jubilee is not only a historical milestone for the institution to commemorate the great achievements it has made in the past seven decades, but also a new chapter in its history to achieve the national goals it expects in the future.
The Minister added that it is a proud achievement that the institution has grown from its limited capacity at the time of its establishment to the ability to implement major road projects that are changing the face of the country and are intergenerational.
In addition, she assured that since road infrastructure is a major driving force for industrial growth, agricultural productivity and tourism expansion, the reform work will continue to be strengthened so that the future journey of the institution is supported by modern technology and digitalization.
Dr. Eyob Tekaleng, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ethiopian Roads Administration, said that the celebration not only celebrates the achievements of the institution in connecting people from one end of the country to the other over the past 75 years, but also provides new impetus to realize the national vision and strengthen the development phases that have begun.
The Director General of the institution, Engineer Mohamed Abdurahman, stated that the 75-year journey of the Ethiopian Roads Administration is not measured only by the number of years, but is a history built on vision, determination, professionalism and the hard work of generations.
He noted that the country’s road network at the time of the institution’s establishment was only 6,400 kilometers, but today, a vast road network of 182,232 kilometers has been built.
According to the Director General, from the previous highway programs to the road sector, as well as through the successive road sector development programs implemented since 1989, significant progress has been recorded in road construction and maintenance, bridge development, road asset management, road safety and institutional capacity building.
He also announced that the institution will continue to strengthen its road development based on the principles of quality, sustainability, safety, environmental protection and modern asset management.
During this three-day festival program, photo and document exhibitions depicting the institution’s 75-year road development journey, modern technology demonstrations and discussion forums will be held.
In addition, various programs, including recognition ceremonies and cultural events, are part of this event.
