General Background 1.1 Location Durame town is found in Southern part of Ethiopia in South Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Regional State, Kemebata-Tembaro Zone at a distance of 119 Km from Hawassa the Regional capital and at a distance of 12Km from the asphalt road that connects Shashemenne and Wolita Sodo. Its astronomical location is 7.17ºC 7.44’ N & 37.84ºC 38.07’ E. 1.2 Foundation The city was founded in 1953 as a municipality and the main factor for the foundation of this town were trade with the neighboring the then Aweraja of Walayita and Gamo Gofa as these areas were used to supply and pass cattle, spices, shema and some industrial products through it. In addition to this, so as to control the coffee trade the check point was opened and its conducive climate was the cause for the foundation of Durame. Durame town had a dense forest which was called by local community as “Duro” which has a meaning of dense forest in local language and it retained this name till date. The town got municipal status 1960. In 2002/2003 the SNNP Regional State Works and Urban Development Bureau study has classified the town as emerging town of the region. Durame is one of the reform towns in the region and has a municipal status consisting of 3 kebelles.
